FOLLOWING the runaway success of the first Chester Santa Dash last December, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd and Countess of Chester Hospital have joined forces once again to bring the festive fun event to the city.

Both charities originally expected 500 people to sign up last year but had to close entries when they reached 1,500.

“We were overwhelmed with the response and had some fantastic comments from runners and walkers who were extremely enthusiastic about taking part and supporting both local charities at the same time,” said Amanda LeBretton, fundraising and marketing manager at the hospice.

Last year the event raised almost £50,000 and was used to buy 20 chair beds for the children’s unit at the Countess and will help toward the cost of the sensory room refurbishment and provide equipment for children with special needs. The hospice used its share of the proceeds to develop its child bereavement service.

This year all the money raised will continue to support the child bereavement service at the hospice and be used toward the cost of improving the special care baby unit at the Countess.

This year’s 4k Chester Santa Dash takes place on Sunday, December 9, from 9am. The event will start from the University of Chester Riverside Campus and be officially started by Coronation Street actor Ian Puleston Davies.

People are urged to sign up early to avoid disappointment. For a £10 entry fee participants will receive a Santa suit (children’s sizes available this year), a medal and a goody bag at the end.
