THE cash office at Cheshire West and Chester Council’s offices in Civic Way, Ellesmere Port, will open its doors to the public for the last time on Thursday, June 30.

The office is used to make payments such as council tax, business rates and rent.

Since the council introduced a range of more local ways to pay across the town – including post offices, PayPoint outlets and a 24-hour telephone payment service – use of the cash office has plummeted.

Cllr Lynn Riley, executive member for community and environment, said: “We’ve seen a significant downturn in customer numbers at the office as residents choose to make their payments in alternative ways.

“More and more people are wishing to pay their bills.

“I know that the cash office has provided an invaluable service to residents over the years and today we are seeing that this outdated way of paying household bills no longer fits with everyday modern needs.

“To find out more about making the change to alternative payment methods or for advice and support, residents should contact our customer services on 0300 123 7020 or visit the main reception at our Civic Way offices.”

West Cheshire residents can continue to make payments of council tax and other council-related bills through direct debits (for council tax call 0300 123 7022 or for business rates call 0300 123 7023); at the post office; at any retail outlet displaying the PayPoint sign; by phone (council tax 0300 123 7022/business rates 0300 123 7023); via the automated 24-hour telephone service (0300 123 7029); at www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk; via telephone banking (access via bank or building society); standing order; or by post (cheque or postal order).
