The coach of Chester Road Runners is calling on people to boost the group’s numbers as the city prepares to host its annual marathon.

Chester Road Runners is a small, friendly group of walkers and runners who meet twice weekly at Westminster Park Cafe.

The group was established as part of Run England, England Athletics’ recreational running programme, which supports people who want to start running or prefer the more social side of running.

It encourages all abilities of walkers, joggers or runners to exercise in a social atmosphere.

Coach Louisa Hallas said: “With the Chester Marathon upon us in October, it could be an ideal way to introduce people to the sport at a manageable pace.

“You don’t need speed to join Chester Road Runners. Our supportive group of walkers and runners will support any new member every step of the way.

“As the dark nights draw in, although we are all at varying abilities in our running and walking, the support we offer each other will keep us all going when we might’ve otherwise hibernated. There is bound to be someone to match your pace and encourage you too and it is a great way to make a friend and get healthy.”

Sessions are planned and led by qualified UK Athletics coaches and leaders.

The Run England programme is free to join, with online discounts offered and sessions with Chester Road Runners are £2 per run.

Chester Road Runners meets every Sunday 10.30am-11.30am at Westminster Park Cafe for a park session, while Wednesdays at 6.30pm-7.30pm  are reserved for a social walk, jog or run of 5k around Chester city centre.
