THE devoted friends of a woman with terminal cancer had their heads shaved to send her young family on a dream holiday to Disneyland.

Four mothers from Ellesmere Port who dubbed themselves The Baldy Birds, came up with the idea to show solidarity with Lisa Williams, who was losing her hair during treatment for cancer of the lung, bone and liver.

Sarah Bell, Gill Dykes, Stephanie Humphreys and Joanna Pemberton took part in the shave-off at Liverpool One at the weekend to help Lisa Williams, of Whitby, go to Disneyland with partner Shaun Höll and four-year-old son David, who goes to Capenhurst Primary School.

Lisa and the hairdressers from Voodou in Liverpool did the honours, while staff at Harvey Nichols beauty bazaar did their make-up and sent them away with goodie bags.

Lisa, 33, an ICT and business teacher at Connah’s Quay High School, has cancer of the lung, bone and liver and is receiving palliative chemotherapy.

The fundraisers’ hair was first cut off into ponytails to be sent to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs and hairpieces for children who suffer hair loss due to cancer treatment.

Sarah and her friends had their hair shaved on a stage and under a marquee borrowed free of charge in front of 300 members of the public.

She said: “People were stuffing £20 and £50 notes in when they found out what it was for.

“We raised £2,135.56 in two hours just shaking buckets.

“We had our own compère, Chris Cairns, a comedian from the Laughterhouse in Liverpool.

“It was more like a party atmosphere. It was really great.”

A group of men, including Lisa’s partner Shaun, got their chests waxed to raise even more funds and the total stands at £12,657.

It is hoped Lisa and her family will be able to fly to Disneyland after Christmas during a break in her chemotherapy treatment at Clatterbridge.
