THE year-long programme of events to celebrate the centenary of Neston Library ends on December 6 – the anniversary of its official opening in 1907.

Among those invited to a special party at the library are people in their ninth decade, including Neston’s oldest book borrower Elizabeth Paul.

Mrs Paul, 99, from Parkgate, celebrates her own centenary next April. She will be joined by 97-year-old John Macdonald of Little Neston and Anne Hurst, 96, of Willaston.

“Those who don’t make the party because understandably they don’t like party noise will be sent something to mark the occasion - and of course a piece of cake,” said librarian in charge Susannah Hill.

With the help of children from Neston Primary School, library staff and managers will unveil a Centenary Mosaic outside the library, a series of seven pieces mounted on paving slabs to symbolise Neston over the last 100 years, with the central piece focused on the library.

The mosaic, designed and created by Neston artists Verity Blakeman, Russell Kirk and Eileen Miller, is sponsored by Cheshire Libraries, Neston Market Town Initiative, the North West Development Agency, URENCO, Arriva Trains Wales and Town Building Materials.
