A TAXI driver who claimed he had been kidnapped and driven to Deeside after responding to a phoney roadside distress call could face prosecution.

Wayne Sadiq told police he had been driving along the A500 near Nantwich when he saw a woman standing in the road with her hands in the air and a man lying apparently lifeless in the gutter.

Mr Sadiq, 29, of Willaston, claimed he had pulled over to help but had been threatened at knife point by the man, who he said ordered him to drive to Deeside.

After two hours, he claimed the couple had driven away in his car.

But a spokeswoman for Cheshire Police yesterday said: "The alleged victim was re- interviewed by police and he has retracted those allegations."

A file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider proceedings.
