MONTHS of preparation reach a climax at Tatton Park this weekend when everyone is invited in to see the mansion decorated for Christmas.

Miles of greenery collected on the park have been used to decorate the various state rooms to recapture the atmosphere of a stately home in the 18th and 19th centuries. And to create more echoes of times gone by a special programme of Christmas music has been compiled to accompany the tours with choirs, a harpsichordist, harpist, flautist and handbell ringers among those taking part.

Mansion manager Caroline Schofield said the Egerton family who lived in the house way back then were particularly fond of music and Elizabeth Egerton was a keen musician who also collected a large number of musical manuscripts, including rare transcripts of pieces by Purcell.

The mansion will be open every weekend in the run up to Christmas from noon until 4pm (last entry 3pm, adult £5, child £2.50).
