Dreams possibly can come true at an Ellesmere Port primary school.

Last year, youngsters at Childer Thornton Primary School approached headteacher Stephanie Raynor with a request for a new all-weather sports pitch so that everybody could have a fair turn.

And now the children are one step closer to achieving their dream after helping raise £8,695 towards their goal.

The school association agreed that new sports facilities were needed to accommodate a rapid increase in pupil numbers at the school and got behind the plan to raise half of the of the total cost through a bingo evening and a summer fair.

The children raised a significant amount of money themselves, through cake sales and a sponsored bounce.

Funds were then matched through Urenco, M&S and Lloyds, and local business Hardings Homes sponsored events.

One of the school’s parents, Gill Morgan, organised an online auction, which received overwhelming support from local businesses, including Village Vets in Childer Thornton, Barton Rouge in Heswall and Downing Lifestyle Photography.

At the association’s AGM last month (September) they were able to present headteacher Stephanie Raynor with a cheque for £8,695.

Chairman Anne-Marie Ablett said: “When an entire community supports our children’s dreams in this way, we are not just telling our children that their dreams are important; we are also showing them that their dreams are important.

“We are showing them that, with hard work, determination, teamwork and community involvement, their dreams can be achieved.”
