FIREFIGHTERS are urging residents trying to keep warm in the cold nights to watch out for faulty electric blankets which could burst into flames.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a list of steps for residents to safeguard themselves against tragedy.

Richard Gorst, unitary performance manager for Cheshire West and Chester, said: “If your blanket or any part of the wiring shows any of these danger signs, have it checked or replaced.

“It’s cheaper to replace a worn electric blanket than it is to replace your family and your home. If you are in any doubt about the condition of your blanket, replace it with a new one and follow our safety tips below.”

Residents are advised to watch out for fraying fabric; scorch marks; creasing or folding; damp patches and loose connections.

All which are signs that the blanket could be dangerous to use.

Firefighters are also advising residents to switch their electric blankets off before they go to bed to avoid the risk of it setting on fire during the night, and to test the safety of the blanket every three years.
