Children at the Firs School have been carving up a treat.

Pupils received a visit from chainsaw sculptor Simon O’Rourke, of Tree Carving Ltd,who has worked in a variety of public places and private gardens.

Simon encouraged the children to create a storybook character and they came up with a bucktooth dragon called Vetrix, who was teased for his appearance, but became a hero after helping fight a forest fire that risked destroying other animals and their homes.

To prepare their sculpture they sketched drawings of the dragon and then progressed to clay modelling. Later in the day Simon used their ideas to create a wood sculpture complete with his buck teeth.

Assistant headteacher Barbara Burns said: “The children had a fantastic time and were able to see the fruits of their labours and identify their own parts of the design as a dragon emerged from a simple log!”
