PLAS Yn Rhos Day Centre has been encouraging the bond between the generations.

The centre invited family, friends and pupils to come and spend time using Mario Kart, one the latest methods to help boost communal activity.

As part of broadening the activities at Play Yn Rhos Day Centre, a Nintendo Wii was introduced into the communal room by Wrexham Council Strategy for Older People Team, using funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to improve the mental and physical agility of both tenants and visitors.

Due to the project’s success this has now progressed to Mario Kart Wii, which can be enjoyed regardless of age or ability making it perfect for use to help bridge gaps between generations and attract a stronger sense of community activity within the centre.

With this in mind a special day was held for both family and friends of Plas Yn Rhos Day Centre users to enjoy an afternoon of racing frivolity.

Carol Edwards, manager of Plas Yn Rhos, said: ‘Traditionally, we play bingo, cards and do arts and crafts but the interaction that comes with the Wii is bringing a new dimension to how everyone socialises. Along with generating a fun alternative to help with physical activity, Mario Kart is encouraging interaction between differing social age groups.”

In addition to family and friends, pupils from Ysgol Maes Y Mynnyd and Ysgol I.D. Hooson, as well as secondary school Ysgol Y Grango Rhos attended the day.
