NORTHWICH’S Carl Ruebotham is proving he is still one of the best cyclists in the country – at the age of 43.
The Winnington rider was recently confirmed as the third best British all-rounder in the national rankings for his overall performances in time-trials this season.
His times in the 50-mile event, 100-mile race and how many miles he clocked up over a 12-hour marathon race were enough to place him in the top three against competitors of all ages.
“It means that I am still beating the young kids too,” said Ruebotham.
“But my goal is that I would like to win the title of best British all rounder but we’ll have to see about that.”
Ruebotham, who rides for Yorkshire-based Team Swift, sponsored by Middlewich’s British Salt, was ranked as the best all rounder in Yorkshire and Manchester at the Veteran’s level.
But alongside team-mates Joel Wieman and Simon Beldon, Team Swift was ranked as the best team in Britain.
Ruebotham is still a member of Hartford-based Weaver Valley CC and is keen for cycling enthusiasts to take up the sport at their local club.
“The best way to get started is to go down to your club and start to do events and try and get faster and faster,” he said.
“Weaver Valley is one of the best clubs in the country and once you start competing against your team-mates you just take it from there.”
Ruebotham is now looking forward to the summer racing season and up first is the Circuit of Ingleborough event in March.
