A road race in Capenhurst on Wednesday, August 20, will celebrate an athlete who passed away suddenly 12 months ago.

The 5k event, organised by Ellesmere Port Running Club, is in memory of one of their runners, Neil Lavery, who died aged 38 on August 31 last year.

The well-established running event, which runs through Capenhurst, has taken place for more than 10 years and begins at 7.15pm.

Sister Denise, who is also a member of Chester Triathlon Club, said: “We have publicised the race a lot more than usual this year due to it being in memory of my brother, so we are expecting quite a lot of people to attend.”

Neil attended two schools in Ellesmere Port, Rossmore Primary and then Sutton High and had several jobs before settling at Innospec in the town, where he became customer care and logistics manager.

He has two sisters, Denise and Debbie, and his mum Barbara and dad Eddie live in Little Sutton. Denise says the family are very close.

Members from Chester Tri and representatives from Innospec, which planted a tree at their site in his memory, are expected to attend.

The race, which has already attracted more than 200 entries, is said to be one of the fastest 5ks in the North West.
