BUTCHERS across Wrexham county borough have the chance to show what a sizzling success their sausages are.

They have been written to about the Wrexham Champion Sausage Competition and it is hoped they will accept the challenge to find Wrexham’s best banger.

Potential entrants have until Monday, February 2, to return their forms, with judging and announcement of the winners taking place on Saturday, February 28.

The judging and prize-giving form part of the St David’s Day celebration weekend in Wrexham, which will see a Welsh market in Queens Square together with music, refreshments and cookery demonstrations by chef Bryn Williams.

On the Sunday there will be a parade of Welsh bands in the town centre finishing with a performance of the national anthem in Queens Square.

The event has been organised by Wrexham County Borough Council’s economic development department.

Cllr Rodney Skelland, lead member for corporate governance and regeneration, said: “Last year’s St David’s Day celebrations were a great success and the sausage competition was an important part of that. Wrexham has a great butchers market in the town centre and many other fine independent butchers in the rural area so this is a great way of promoting what we have to offer.”

Judge Dennis Turner will be officiating, while Stephen Plume is expected to attend.

Last year’s winning entry was a pork-and-chive sausage made by R S Williams and Sons of Bank Street in the town centre.
