BUDDING horticulturists are being sought to get involved in a gardening competition.

Burleydam Garden Centre in Ellesmere Port is sponsoring the competition and looking for green-fingered volunteers to take part in its annual ‘Something Blooming Special’ contest, which has a new category to motivate keen gardeners.

Entrants are asked to create floral displays using recycled containers, with the first 100 applications being given a free tray of annual bedding plants to get growing.

Burleydam is offering the giveaway to encourage more entries and creative use of waste materials.

Greenspace team members from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) are working with Locality Team members to help promote environmental projects in gardens, villages and towns.

Cllr Eleanor Johnson said: “Many great environmental benefits are achieved when recycled materials are used to make something new.

“The judges will be looking for the most imaginative displays and I am looking forward to seeing the results.

“Having six categories means there is something for everyone.”

Application forms are available at www.talkingwestcheshire.org/somethingbloomingspecial or at libraries and council buildings.

All applications should be sent to Greenspace Team Cheshire West and Chester Council, Wyvern House, The Drumber, Winsford, CW7 1AH by Friday, July 5.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Burleydam Garden Centre in the autumn.

All entries will be viewed by the judges before mid-August.
