The trial of footballer Mark Kennedy, charged with failing to provide a breath specimen, resumes today.

The Republic of Ireland international denied the charge when he appeared before magistrates sitting at Northwich, Cheshire, last month.

Dublin-born Kennedy, 25, has pleaded guilty to driving his car without due care and attention - a charge he previously denied.

Charges of failing to stop for a police officer and driving while unfit through drink were dismissed by the court after the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence.

Magistrates heard how the Wolverhampton Wanderers winger was pulled over by police in the early hours of Sunday, September 9, last year close to his home in Cheshire.

Prosecutor Keith Jones said the footballer was "obstructive" when taken to Wilmslow police station.

Giving evidence the former Liverpool and Manchester City player said he was waiting for advice from his solicitor before providing a breath specimen.

The case is due to resume at Northwich magistrates' court.
