THE New Saints have bolstered their Welsh Premier squad by signing striker Ronnie “The Rocket” Morgan from Unibond League Division One club Cammell Laird.

TNS boss Ken McKenna has finally got his man after spending three years tracking the 26-year-old, who was placed on the transfer list at his own request last week.

The striker has scored an amazing 180 goals in the four years since Lairds left the West Cheshire League and embarked on their climb up the non-League pyramid.

“I have always felt Ronnie was capable of playing at a higher level and once he decided to leave Lairds I just had to go for him,” said McKenna.

Ironically, Morgan will make a swift return to the Kirklands Stadium in Birkenhead with TNS due to meet Lairds in a pre-season friendly.

The Saints, champions of the Welsh Premier, returned to training this week ahead of next month’s Uefa Champions League qualifer.

Meanwhile, Gary Brabin has returned to the club as assistant manager following the recent departure of head coach Andy Cale.

The former Football League midfielder will organise coaching, scouting and player development at the club where he made 47 Welsh Premier appearances.

The 36-year-old, latterly of Burscough, will also be registered as a player for the defending champions, but his main role will be to assist manager Ken McKenna.

Elsewhere, Newtown boss Darren Ryan has moved to sign defender Hugh Clarke from neighbours Caersws.

Clarke, 35, has made 326 appearances for the club.

“I’ve been looking to bring in more experienced players, and there’s no more experienced than Hugh,” said Ryan.
