CREWE and Nantwich has been given the thumbs-up in a national survey focusing on the quality of life for people across the country.

In stark contrast to neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent, the borough received high ratings in a survey which considered 376 local authority areas in England and Wales.

Overall, Crewe and Nantwich rated at 155 while Stoke-on-Trent finished bottom of the ranking which was carried out by Experian, a global information solutions company.

Neighbouring Congleton fared even better, coming in at 47 with Vale Royal at 157.

Each borough was judged on eight areas, access to quality retail and leisure amenities, house affordability, schools, income, population, congestion, unemployment and crime rates.

They were scored on each category and totted up to be given an average standard and performance rating.

Crewe and Nantwich boasts a top 100 placing in the house price affordability with the average house in the borough costing £63,341.

It also enjoys a high quality of leisure and retail facilities, relatively low population and fairly low on traffic congestion with 41,208 vehicles compared to 78,491 in Stoke-on-Trent.

Although the borough featured in the top half of the table for six categories, it was placed at 209 for unemployment (3.31% of adults) and 291 for crime, combining vehicle crime, vandalism and burglary.

Congleton was placed in the top 50 due to its excellent schools, good retail facilities and low unemployement but was let down by high crime rates.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council chief executive Alan Wenham said: 'This report is confirmation that this area of Crewe and Nantwich has a lot going for it and what we will be planning in the future to build on these strengths and climb higher and higher up.'
