A BLIND spot is putting cyclists in danger of being hit by fast-moving cars, it is claimed.

The junction of the A41 and A5117 forms part of the Cheshire Cycleway from Beeston to Ellesmere Port.

Mike Johnson, from Saughall, uses the route and fears for his own safety because, he said, a hedge obscures his view of the road.

He added: “It's one and a half miles from the new pelican crossing. The cycleway crosses the A41 at a point where traffic is coming at you 50mph.

“If you're cycling or walking back, you've got to be almost in the main carriageway before you can see if you can cross.”

Mr Johnson complained about the situation to David Reeves, senior vulnerable road user officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council.

He was told there are no plans to provide any formal crossing provision.

Mr Reeves added: “You are correct that visibility northbound onto the A41 when approaching from Cheshire Oaks direction is not brilliant, however visibility is fine at the crossing point, as with all crossing points pedestrians and cyclists should stop and wait until safe to proceed.

“Members of the road safety team recently cycled the route (I am also a regular user of this route) and found no major problems at this junction.”

Mr Johnson stressed he thought the crossing point should be moved.

He added: “You've got a council officer who's agreeing visibility is not brilliant.

“I would say it's appalling, never mind 'not brilliant'.
