A BARRISTER has been charged with assaulting a female friend.

Huw Eifion Roberts, 30, is accused of attacking Lorna Graves in Handbridge, Chester, on Thursday last week. His case was mentioned in court for the first time on Wednesday, although he did not personally appear to answer the charge.

Roberts, who lives in Salmon Leap, Handbridge, is charged with carrying out a section 39 assault on Miss Graves.

No other details of the alleged offence have been aired in court yet.

His solicitors sent a letter to Chester Magistrates Court on Wednesday asking for the case to be adjourned to August 15 for further inquiries.

Prosecutor Jackie Lamb told the Bench: 'This is a case that has some sensitivity because of his circumstances. It needs to be carefully reviewed.

'There is a question as to where it will be held, as Roberts is counsel in this area. It is possible it will be held elsewhere in Cheshire.

'I understand it will be a 'not guilty' plea.'

Roberts, who is a well known face acting for both prosecution and defence at Chester Crown Court, was granted unconditional bail.

He is one of the youngest members of the Bar in Chester.
