A MASTERPLAN for the development of Ellesmere Port’s historic waterways has been revealed.

The partnership behind Waterfront – Vision for the Future presented a joint vision to rejuvenate the waterfront and the surrounding areas a fortnight ago.

Partners Peel Land and Property, The Waterways Trust, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Ellesmere Port Development Board have worked together to create a long-term strategy to turn the waterways conservation area and surrounding sites into a rival for Liverpool’s Albert Dock.

The Pioneer can reveal an artist’s impression highlighting where the ambitious development will be concentrating its resources.

Improved links to and from the town: The town is reconnected with its waterfront; easier to get to on foot, cycle, car and public transport.

Promenade, public space and walking route: A place to stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the views.

New homes: A waterside neighbourhood covering an area of a similar size to Cheshire Oaks.

Cafés, bars, restaurants and shops: A vibrant collection of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops in the style of Albert Dock.

Enhanced National Waterways Museum: Greater development of tourism opportunities around the historic canal port and the Shropshire Union Canal.

Marina and Raddle Wharf: Development of an active, lively marina.

Development site: Currently the National Waterways Museum car park area, earmarked for new business opportunities.

Improvement area: Improved approaches, including Merseyton Road.

Ferry link: Partnership with Manchester Ship Canal Company to operate leisure cruises from summer 2011.

Water leisure uses: More opportunities for canoeing, fishing and boating.
