CUT-PRICE supermarket Aldi has agreed to review its decision to route HGVs through some of Wirral's rural villages.

The announcement follows a meeting with wirral South MP Ben Chapman who has supported a strong local campaign against the supermarkets plans to send lorries along parts of Wirral from a planned new depot near Neston.

Aldi were given planning permission in 2003 to use the former Marconi site at Neston as a distribution hub for its stores in the Merseyside and North West area.

But since then residents in Wirral have campaigned to have the decision reversed after being told lorries would have to travel through Thornton Hough or Barnston Dip, in Barnston, to get to and from the depot.

Last night Mr Chapman said he had a successful meeting with Aldi North West managing director, Matthew Barnes, about the proposals, but added that there were still some areas of dispute. "While I made it clear that I did not believe that my constituents would accept this view I nevertheless believe that opening up a dialogue can only be helpful," he said.
