Two community ventures have been given a big boost as the result of a ‘24-hour hack gig’.

The Good For Nothing Chester event saw coders, designers and thinkers – including two members of the Chester Chronicle newsroom – join forces to help out the new charitable schemes.

The group was informed about what needed to be done during the hack gig at a mission briefing event held at the King Charles Tower – the first time the tower had been open for use as a public function meeting area.

One of the two community ventures to benefit from the event was Ludicology – a Chester-based venture designed to harvest knowledge and share pods of playful thinking for the benefit of children.

The other was Bridge Community Farm, a social enterprise based in Ellesmere Port aiming to help the long-term unemployed and military veterans returning to civilian life by offering them work in a therapeutic environment.

Touted as the Sunny Day hack, the weather didn’t disappoint as two teams put their heads together at the offices of digital agency WM 360 in Merchant House, Crook Street, Chester.

In the spirit of Good For Nothing, the business had kindly lent its office space for the day for free.

Also on hand to lend their support and services for no cost were Robinsons Brewery, The Natural Vegmen, ShortList Recruitment and Joseph Benjamin, while an ice cream van provided welcome free refreshment following a brainstorming morning.

The end result saw the websites of the two respective ventures updated with new designs and ideas, with plenty of advice and suggestions on where the ventures could be improved.
