There are scores of reasons why Hoole deserves to be crowned the UK’s best high street, according to the community group responsible for getting it on to the shortlist.

The people behind the Notting Hoole local events team put the area forward for the Google-sponsored national competition celebrating town centre excellence earlier this year because they wanted to ‘do something for the community’.

And they were thrilled when the community was officially named as one of the top three streets in the Local Centre category of the Great British High Street competition.

The eventual winner receives a share of a prize pot worth £80,000 as well as expert training and tailor-made tips from Google’s training taskforce for 100 shops, bars and restaurants.

Now they need to get as many votes as possible in order to beat off category rivals Bishy Road in York and Bath Place in Taunton and believe there are more than enough reasons why the people of Chester should ‘vote Hoole’.

Notting Hoole member Samantha Jackson, who runs Chester Beer and Wine, told The Chronicle Hoole was not just a place but ‘a way of life’.

“Entering the competition was an obvious choice for all of us as we have so much to be proud of and celebrate in our community,” she said. “I walk through Hoole and I see friends and colleagues and just feel I’m home.

“Although it started as a meeting of a small group of us wanting to do something positive for our community, it has snowballed over the last few months and caught everyone’s imagination, making a close community even stronger.

“People are asking how they can help for the next step in the competition. We’ve had people give their time and resources to put together a fantastic bid which has seen Hoole shortlisted to the three best local centres in the country.

“It’s also made people realise how important Hoole is to them and how proud they all are of their home,” she added.

“We are such a special place with amazing independent shops, major retailers and a caring and tolerant community where everyone is welcome. I feel that winning this competition will reward each and every ‘Hooligan’ who makes Hoole the amazing place it is.”

The team have also come up with 26 descriptions of what is great about Hoole, which includes the words ‘caring, diverse, eclectic, neighbourly, traditional and respectful.
