A FIRST class holiday lodge for disabled children and their families has been officially unveiled in Delamere.

Champions Lodge, which has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, was officially opened by Chair of the Vale Royal Disability Service Christine Pickthall MBE.

Built to hotel standard, funding for the lodge came from the Government’s Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme and Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC).

There is specialised equipment in both bathrooms and one of the bedrooms in the property, which is aimed for families who have disabled children and young people up to the age of 25.

In the kitchen, work surfaces can be highered or lowered and in the bathroom there is a range of appropriate equipment including a hoist and showering table.

Outside there will be a fenced garden, accessible parking and level access to the lodge.

Ms Pickthall said: “I was pleased to accept the invitation because it provided an opportunity to celebrate the successful partnership established between CWaC and all the young disabled people who were encouraged to give a voice in the design and construction of this lovely ‘fully accessible’ building in the heart of Delamere Forest.

“I know that it will provide a much needed and much used short break facility for young disabled people and their families.”

Parents and young people have been fully involved in the project and the name of the lodge was chosen by disabled young people.

Council leader Mike Jones, who attended the launch event, added: “This wonderful building is the result of a successful partnership with everyone doing that little bit extra to ensure that the lodge is first class and allows families with a disabled child or young person to have a holiday break in the wonderful environment of Delamere.

“It really is very pleasing that in these difficult financial times that Champions Lodge has been built and comes three years after we opened Mountain View Lodge in Anglesey, which gives people who stay there, a similar holiday experience.”
