Take a tour around Chester – and see how the city looked in 1934.
This black-and-white film, from the British Pathé archives and used here with their kind permission, is titled ‘A Bulwark Of The Legions’ and showcases some of the city’s main tourist attractions.
The Town Hall, Chester Cathedral, The Rows and the city’s historic Roman walls all feature.
Cars and buses trundle up and down the main streets, which are now mostly pedestrianised, but what is striking is just how little Chester has changed in the past 82 years.
The film, which would have been shown in cinemas at the time, is backed by music and a narrator, who describes Chester as “an attractive town of picturesque streets and Roman treasures”.
The title of the film refers to when the Romans used the walls as a bulwark – or barrier – to protect them from invading northern tribes.
