Do you remember when you could go and see theatre performances in Chester?
Back in the day, The Royalty Theatre on City Road was one of the go-to places for Cestrians looking for family entertainment, and over the years there were dozens of performances.
Now, a mini photographic exhibition called ‘Welcome to the Theatre’ portrays just some of these, dated from the late 1950’s to when the Royalty closed in 1966.
Organised by Cathryn Eales at Chester’s History and Heritage Centre , the images are from the time that entertainer Dennis Chritchley managed the Royalty Theatre.
Cathryn said: “With grateful thanks to Keith Hobbs for sharing his photographic collection of the Royalty Theatre with Chester History and Heritage Centre, the exhibition will be on at St. Mary’s Centre, St. Mary’s Hill, as part of the Heritage Open Days Weekend on Friday 11 from 10am to 4pm, and Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm.”
The late Chester ventriloquist Keith Harris started his career at the Royalty, and it was also a popular haunt for revellers to enjoy a night out.
