A great-grandmother from Little Sutton has unearthed some historic postcards of Neston and Chester sent to her grandparents in the early 1900s.
Eileen Wynne, 86, who now lives in London, has provided the Pioneer with a selection of the cards that were sent to her grandparents’ home at Hooton Hall.
Eileen’s paternal grandfather, George Mitchelmore, was head of outside working at Hooton Hall and lived there with his wife Sarah and their children.
One of Mr Mitchelmore’s main jobs was to tend the horses and make sure they had the right feed that they needed before a race at the resident racecourse.
Sarah was a housewife but was often asked to help serve for large dinner parties in the main house.
Eileen said that one of the women that was asked if she would ‘come and wait’ once was found sitting on a bench. When asked why she was there she replied ‘I’m waiting’ which then became a running joke within the family.
From what Eileen’s mum told her about the house she said: “There was always plenty of food there because of the woods. Lots of rabbits and such.”
