Doodling has paid off for one group of school children for once.

Pupils from Highfield Community Primary School in Blacon sent their drawings to new children’s laureate Chris Riddell to congratulate him on his appointment.

The illustrator is doing a doodle for every day he is in the post and dedicated his June 24 sketch to the Year 5 class.

Mr Riddell’s tribute to the children featured a masked man tweeting the children to ‘keep doodling’.

The accompanying text read: “Masked man of mystery. Employing his super hero tweeting powers to say congratulations to Highfield Community Primary School, Blacon, Chester.”

Since the recognition the class have also been assigned some homework on the laureate, who is a children’s author and also political cartoonist for The Observer.

Highfield Community Primary School head teacher Nicky Dowling said: “What an honour. The news that Chris Riddell had drawn a doodle just for us was a wonderful surprise.

“We were thrilled that the Year 5 ‘Congratulations to Chris’ messages were recognised in such a special and unique way.”
