Students at The Hammond School will perform an opera premiere this month.

The musical theatre and drama students will present Chip and His Dog in The Hammond Theatre on Friday, March 14, at 1pm and 7pm, accompanied by professional musicians.

Chip and His Dog is a one act children's opera by Gian Carlo Menotti. Written in 1978 , it has never previously been performed in the UK.

The storyline follows the story of Chip, a lonely young evacuee and his loyal dog who performs tricks.

They meet a princess and together they capture her heart and entire kingdom.

The performance is part of a double bill with Lest We Forget , a musical drama set during the First World War. In the centenary year of the start of the war, this powerful drama reminds the audience of the immeasurable sacrifice made by so many in defence of our freedom.

The performance includes Butterworth’s evocative song settings of A H Houseman’s A Shropshire Lad together with excerpts, scenes and accounts of the forgotten voices of a lost generation.
