A football fan has been charged after racist chanting was directed at a Chester FC goalie during his debut match.

Aaron Chapman was sent off early during his first match for the club when he dislocated a finger during the winning game against Halifax FC.

But during the home match, played at the Blue’s stadium, the 6ft 8ins player was allegedly subject to racist abuse from rival fans.

A 34-year-old Halifax fan has now been charged with racial harassment following the alleged offence, which was reportedly heard by the new goalkeeper and several witnesses during the match on Thursday, February 13.

Matthew Graham Sewell, from Halifax is due to appear before Chester Magistrates Court this Thursday.

Chapman, who was recently signed by the community club, describes his ethnicity as mixed Caribbean.
