Tributes have been paid to a keen sportsman who has died less than three weeks after being involved in a collision with a bus on the A41 at Backford near Chester.

Martin Keith Griffiths, from Guilden Sutton, Chester, was seriously injured in the incident which happened on the northbound carriageway of the A41, close to the Ellesmere Port turn-off, at 8.45am on Monday September 23.

The 59-year-old was taken by ambulance to Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool where his condition was initially described as critical. He was understood to have suffered fractures to his ribs and pelvis. Sadly, Mr Griffiths died last Friday.

In a statement, Mr Griffiths’ family said: “Martin, who lived his whole life in Chester, was known as a keen sportsman playing football, tennis and cricket.

“He was closely linked to Chester Boughton Hall Cricket Club and Chester Nomads Football Club. Aged 59, he leaves behind his wife Gina, children Matthew and Lauren and parents Doreen and Keith. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.”

Jim Law, a former chairman of Chester Boughton Hall Cricket Club, said: “Martin is from a cricketing family. Lauren played for England and Matthew plays for the first team. Martin played cricket and football for many years. He was always involved and watched cricket religiously and was a great character and quite flamboyant.”

Mr Law said his thoughts were with his family and wife Gina, who is also involved with Boughton Hall as she watches her son play both home and away.

Mr Griffiths’ funeral takes place at All Saints Church, Hoole, on Wednesday, October 30 at 1.40pm followed by a service at Chester Crematorium chapel. A celebration of his life will follow at Chester Boughton Hall Cricket Club. All enquiries to Dutton and Hallmark: 01244 310966.
