Golfstorehouse West has won the contract to manage the council’s Westminster Park golf course and café in Chester.

The company takes over on April 1 and the ‘pay and play’ policy for golfers will continue. At present the site is operated by Brio Leisure.

Councillor Stuart Parker, executive member for culture and economy said: “The council looks forward to working with Golfstorehouse West and we made sure that local members and the Friends of Westminster Park are satisfied with the deal.

“The company has plans for the nine hole golf course, which of course will continue to welcome golfers of all ages and now it will be managed by people who have a close association both with the course and the sport itself.”

Director Paul Hodgson from Golfstorehouse West said: “We are delighted to be chosen to operate Westminster Park. The golf course holds a special place in our hearts as myself and fellow director Nick Stark both started playing there.

“We believe that everyone has the opportunity to get into the great game of golf and we intend to provide facilities that will attract all age groups and allow them to become involved and to enjoy the sport.

“We will be encouraging more people to participate in golf and we will also be looking to expand disability participation with local groups.

“Additionally we have plans to reinvigorate the café in order to create a social hub for the park and to achieve these objectives we will be working very closely with the local community and local schools.”

Handbridge Park councillor Neil Sullivan added: “This announcement is great news for local people and for everyone who lives further afield who travel to the golf course.

“I wish them every success for the future and support the company’s plans to reinvigorate golf, the course and the café.”
