The family of a 12-year-old girl seriously injured after being involved in a collision with a private hire car are backing a road safety campaign.

Chloe Fraser, a Chester Catholic High School pupil, from Cliveden Road, Lache, was airlifted to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital where she is recovering with two broken legs after the incident at a roundabout yards from her home.

Parents living nearby have started a campaign to improve safety at the junction which is close to shops and schools and has been the scene of several accidents.

They want the centre of the roundabout flattened because it can be an attraction to children, bus stops moved away from the junction and zebra crossings installed on either side. In addition, they believe a 20mph speed limit would be appropriate in a residential area.

Chloe’s father Kurt Williams, 38, supports the aims of the initiative.

He and his partner Kerry Fraser hope she will be home next week but know it will be a long road to recovery.

Kurt, a father of five, who comforted his daughter as she lay in the road, said she had just got off the bus on her way home from school when the accident happened about 3.50pm on Monday, March 3.

He added:“She’s saying she was crossing the road with a friend. They were going towards the roundabout when it happened .”

Paula Matthews, 44, from Willow Road, who has started a petition calling for road safety improvements, has written to Chester MP Stephen Mosley and been talking to council officers.

Paula, who has two grown up children and a baby granddaughter, said: “I went to a meeting last Wednesday and the next one is on April 2.

“I spoke with the housing, the council and there was a panel of a few residents but it was the council woman, Janet Walters, I spoke to and she was going to go back to speak to highways to see about signs and flattening the roundabout. She rang me back and said they were having a safety team come out in the next couple of weeks.”

Mum-of-two Katie Lockett, 29, from Oxford Road, said: “I’m not being awful on the poor little girl but this has brought it to the forefront. Is it going to take a child or another person to lose their life?
