A community champion has been rewarded for decades of dedication after being named on the New Year’s Honours List.

For almost half a century, Margaret Croston has devoted herself to her community, throwing herself into charity work, local politics and projects in her village of Christleton.

Now as she celebrates her 90th birthday, Margaret has been recognised for her years of service to the community after being awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Margaret, who lives in Bridge Drive with her husband Alf, has collected hundreds of cuttings from the Chronicle dating back to the 1970s about the village, creating a unique account of Christleton life over the past 40 years for the community’s enjoyment.

Mother to Nevil and Roger, Margaret sat on the parish council for 30 years; had a long-standing service as a governor of St James’s Primary School; and is a member of the Chester Ladies Luncheon Club.

Margaret was also a committee member and chairman of Guide Dogs for the Blind for 27 years, a Chester Cathedral Guide and speakers secretary for Chester Society of Natural Science, Literature and Art.

“It was a lovely surprise,” said Margaret, who opened the Christleton Village Show in 2011 as the community celebrated her tireless contributions over the past 50 years.

“I have known for a couple of months, it was hard to keep it to myself. I was very shocked, but I am very excited.”

Margaret, who was nominated by several people in the community, thanked her family for all the support they had given her over the years, saying: “I think they are quite surprised but very proud.

“They have supported me through everything.”
