Thousands of Chester students celebrated the start of the academic year at a one-off money-saving shopping event in Grosvenor Shopping Centre, called Thanks Duck It’s Thursday, on Thursday, October 9.

Retailers including Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, River Island, Bank and many more gave exclusive discounts in-store, as well as special offers and competitions during the event.

Students also had the chance to win £10 gift vouchers to spend in a variety of the shopping centre’s stores by playing ‘hook a duck’, as well as picking up their very own green Grosvenor duck, as part of the event.

One winner James Evans, 18, said: “It’s been great, there are some great giveaways and winning a Topman voucher has made my night!”

Some of Chester students’ favourite bars and restaurants including Nandos, Watergates, Revolution and Missoula also offered shoppers free drinks tasters, competitions, games and giveaways, whilst Rosies nightclub provided entertainment.

Regis hairdressers provided free hairstyling during the event to get student shoppers ready for a big night out.

Becky Palmer, 19, who had her hair styled by Regis for free on the night said: “I love my hair, I’m ready to hit the bars later now!”

Julie Webb, general manager at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, added: “Students love a bargain so the night was a real hit. It’s also a great opportunity to show what Chester has to offer as a whole from the best shopping to fantastic nightlife to the most stylish hairdressers. It can be daunting when you move to a new city so having the best of everything on show under one roof makes the transition a little easier.”

Students also had the chance to win tickets to see music artist Ed Sheeran perform live in Manchester thanks to radio station Capital FM’s competition.
