ACTIVISTS campaigning on behalf of council tenants have been pounding the streets helping people understand plans for the future of their homes.

The Halton Tenant's Steering Group is urging all residents of council houses in the borough to get involved in the democratic process, as Halton Borough Council considers plans to transfer their housing stock to an independent association or trust.

Before any transfer can happen, there will be a ballot of all tenants, and the Tenant's Steering Group is committed to providing people with free access to information to help them make an informed decision.

David Williams, a tenant advisor with independent housing experts DWA, said: 'We will have three advisors touring the borough. Tenants views need to be at the heart of this.'

The information 'Battlebus' has been touring Halton's estates, and the group will also be organising advice surgeries and drop-in sessions at various venues.

Deborah Walthorne, managing director of DWA, said: 'We're touring the borough's council housing, we're speaking to tenants and residents groups, visiting community centres and libraries and trying to reach as many people as possible.

'We want to make sure everyone has a chance to get involved. Already, dozens of people have been in touch with us using our Freephone service on 0800 0855 492, and the Steering Group has sent out a special newsletter.'
