A tireless Brown Owl who has inspired countless Brownies and Girl Guides over the past 25 years has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Nikki Barker’s dedication to Weaver District Guides and Brownies has put her in the running for Champion Volunteer of the Year in the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards scheme.

The 44-year-old Dutton mum joined Brownies when she was just seven and now runs 3rd Frodsham Brownies.

“I am a big believer in girls needing some girl-only space,” Nikki said.

“I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing things the girls do come to fruition.”

Nikki is currently project-managing the extension to Frodsham’s Brownie headquarters on Ship Street.

When she’s not fulfilling her Guiding and Brownie responsibilities, chartered engineer Nikki runs her own engineering consultancy focusing mainly in the UK pipeline and energy industries.

She has also recently taken on the role of director for voluntary organisations at Frodsham Foundation.

Nikki was nominated by fellow Brown Owl Michelle Hopley, who said: “Nikki is the main person that keeps our district together. She is the one that the leaders go to for help and advice.

“She is the person who is the organiser and gets the job done. Many girls in Frodsham have had the opportunity to be part of Girl Guiding UK because of what Nikki has done for Frodsham.”

Former Weaver division commissioner and Frodsham district commissioner Nikki added: “It is lovely to be nominated. Michelle does so much with her unit too. It’s really nice to have another guider put my name forward for the nomination.”
