A LONG-SERVING Upton Rainbows group leader is in line for a Your Champions accolade.

Christine Smith has run the group of more than 15 girls aged between five and seven for the past 17 years. Her efforts have seen her put forward for the Champion Volunteer of the Year award.

Joanne Cormack, who nominated Christine for the honour, said: “Chris receives very little thanks for the continued commitment; while I’m sure all the mums of the past 17 years are indeed thankful, I thought (along with other mums) it would be great for Chris to be acknowledged and appreciated in public.

“Chris shows no sign of passing on her volunteer duties and continues working hard to recruit helpers and keep the weekly group going.

“Rainbows are old-fashioned fun and without this club, young girls would miss new friendships, fun and games and a sense of community.”

Christine, who manages to balance being a Rainbows group leader with having three jobs, said: “My mother was a Guide captain and my father was a Scoutmaster, they met through that way. I have now been in Girlguiding for 18 years.”
