A COMMUNITY stalwart who helps provide social activities in Blacon for older people has been put forward for a Your Champions accolade.

Jean Jones, who lives in Blacon, took over the running of a dance club following the closure of the community centre and the previous owners’ retirement.

Now the club, held at the Holy Trinity Church on Tuesdays from 2-4pm, is thriving.

Jean’s efforts have been recognised and she has been nominated in the Person of the Year category.

Audrey and John Grundy, who nominated Jean, said: “Jean gives her time every Tuesday for the people of Blacon and surrounding areas to participate in dancing, social chat, listening to the music with tea and biscuits, including people from the local care home.”

Jean said of the award nomination: “I’m quite surprised and amazed.

“When the group at the community centre closed there was nowhere for people to go so I volunteered to keep it going at the church.

“Not everybody dances, some just like the company and listening to music. I also partner various people who would like to dance.”
