A COMMUNITY project which provides home comforts for residents in Blacon and the surrounding areas has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

The Blacon Furniture Project, located in Dee Point Centre, has proved popular in troubled economic times for offering affordable furniture to hard-up families.

The group’s efforts have won it a nomination for Champion Team of the Year.

Project manager Richard Harland said: “We have been in this part of Blacon for coming up to four years, and don’t just reuse furniture for Blacon, it’s for the whole of Chester.

“We make it available at a low price for families. I am the only paid member of staff, the other eight are all volunteers.

“Last year we diverted 65 tons of waste from landfill so we do our bit for the environment.”

Clare Babbs, who nominated the Blacon Furniture Project for the award, said: “The team is almost wholly run by committed volunteers who help those in hardship across Chester.

“This is a much-needed and increasingly sought service in times of economic hardship for a lot of local families.”
