YOUNGSTERS from primary schools across Chester have been getting in the Olympic spirit.

Boys and girls from Year 6 have been competing in indoor athletics tournaments at high schools to qualify for the Chester and District final, which will take place at the Northgate Arena next week.

Heats have taken place at all Chester high schools and at Tarporley and Bishop Heber in Malpas.

The team from Overleigh St Mary’s CE Primary School came first in the Queen’s Park High School event, beating Dodleston and St Thomas of Canterbury schools.

At the event, Chester Schools Sport Partnership young ambassador for London 2012, Steve Jameson, encouraged the children to develop their interest in sport in preparation for the Olympic Games.

The Overleigh team will now compete against, among others, St Theresa’s Catholic Primary School, which won the Catholic High School heat, and Huntington Primary School, which won the heat at Bishops’ Bluecoat CE High School. The Chester and District tournament is on Wednesday, January 28.

The winner will go on to represent the city at a Cheshire-wide tournament.
