Young singers from The Queen’s School have reached the semi-finals of a national television competition for the third year running.
Queen’s Young Voices choir will appear in the BBC’s Songs of Praise Junior Choir of the Year contest which will be broadcast on April 3.
The choir, led by music teacher Margaret Corlett, travelled to Sheffield City Hall last month to join five other school choirs from across the country who had been selected from a CD recorded entry back in November.
The girls had have worked hard to learn a new arrangement of the hymn Take this Moment by John Bell.
After a vocal warm-up and sound and camera checks on the stage, the recording session itself started in the afternoon and the girls were cheered on by parents and friends in the audience.
The live recording followed a trip to the lower school on Liverpool Road by a production crew from the BBC last month. As well as filming the choir performing, they also filmed a short speech and drama session and an art lesson with groups of pupils.
Year 6 pupils Ananya Chandra and Matilda Hughes were invited to take control of the microphones and give the visitors a tour of the school. Head of Lower School Rachel Cookson said: “We are so proud of the Young Voices Choir. For the third time in succession, we have reached the semi-final of this prestigious competition. To be amongst the top six choirs in the country once again reflects the consistently excellent delivery of music teaching at our school.”
