Three young boys were reportedly chased by clowns in Ellesmere Port over the weekend, as the bizarre American craze to scare unsuspecting strangers takes hold in Cheshire.
Police confirmed they received reports from creeped-out members of the public about two separate incidents of costume-wearing pranksters on the prowl in the town on Sunday afternoon (October 10).
A clown was supposedly spotted on Armthorpe Drive in Little Sutton , while some are said to have frightened three boys on Luton Road a few hours earlier.
A spokesman for Cheshire Constabulary said they were told that the youngsters had been 'chased'.
Officers were dispatched to both of the alleged incidents, but found no trace of the clowns.
The spokesman stressed that they were not believed to be carrying any weapons and no threats were made, according to each report.
Last week, the force issued a warning to anyone tempted to join in the strange phenomenon that they could face prosecution for their 'unacceptable' behaviour.
"While we appreciate Halloween is just a short time away, scaring people – especially children and vulnerable people – in this way is completely unacceptable and could constitute an offence," the statement said.
Anyone who sees any suspicious activity, or who has been intimidated or upset by this sort of behaviour, is asked to call police on 101.
