COUNCILLORS are calling for action to target joyriders who have been using a golf course as a 'rally track', before setting fire to cars.

Vandals have been spotted driving on to Knight's Grange in Winsford, ripping up the turf around the green by performing wheel spins and handbrake turns, before abandoning the cars when they have been driven into the ground. Some have been set alight.

Sections of fencing around the golf course and football pitches have been vandalised, and yobs torched fencing while groundsmen were repairing a different section of the boundary.

Councillors Des Worthington and Peter Gannon are furious at the spate of vandalism and believe more must be done to address the problem.

Cllr Gannon said: 'There has been six cars burned out on Knight's Grange in the last two weeks.

'They've been using it as a rally track and jumping cars over the humps.

'They have smashed the fencing down and it's just a matter of time before they smash into someone's backyard.

'It is just a small minority of youths that are doing this, and it is not far away from where you see decent kids playing football and trying to have a good time.'

The councillors said they confronted the youths who had started a fire on the site after camping out all evening.

'They just gave us a mouthful of abuse,' said Cllr Worthington. 'We've been in touch with the police over it.'

While Cllrs Gannon and Worthington were showing me damage at the golf course, three youths were spotted using a spade to dig up turf near the football pitch. Cllr Worthington said: 'This is what we are up against.'

Anyone with information about vandalism at Knight's Grange should call Winsford's CAT on 01244 612583 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
