A WORLD record attempt is being made for the longest hand designed bunting to encircle the whole of Chester walls.

The Cotton on to Fairtrade event, which involves schools and community groups across the borough, takes place on March 12 and will involve 13,200 flags stretching three kilometres as part of Fairtrade fortnight celebrations.

More people are needed to come forward to help decorate the bunting with their Fairtrade designs.

Councillor Kate Birtwistle, Member Champion for Fairtrade, said: “I am delighted that groups from across the whole of Cheshire West and Chester have been discussing the important issues that surround Fairtrade and then illustrating those messages onto their Fairtrade cotton bunting.”

“The event in Chester creates a wonderful opportunity for all of these groups to join together, raising awareness about trade justice and hopefully setting a new world record.”

If you would like to take part in the world record attempt please contact climatechange@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk or Stefania Isbell on 01244 972435.

Everyone taking part will meet at Chester Amphitheatre at 10.15am on Saturday, March 12 together with their bunting and enough people are needed to hold it up along the walls beginning at 11am.

Chester was the world’s first Fairtrade city and the council is applying for Fairtrade status across the borough.

Also as part of Fairtrade fortnight a tea dance is being held at Chester Guildhall on March 3 between 2pm and 4pm. Tickets cost £2.50 and include refreshments and live music.

And on March 11 a Fairtrade wine tasting is taking place at Chester Town Hall at 7.30pm. Entrance costs £5 and the event supports the Lord Mayor’s charities.
