BUDDING explorers battled waterlogged paths and heavy fog to climb Great Britain’s three highest mountains in just 24 hours.

The workers from Muir Group Housing Association even lost the path during the climb up Scafell Pike in the early hours of the morning after thick fog and heavy rain caused them to leave the rocky path.

“We finished Ben Nevis in the evening and started climbing Scafell Pike at 3am the next day and the fog and cloud was unbelievable,” said Mark Gould, IT Manager at Muir Group Housing Association.

“The paths were like rivers because of the rain the day before so we had to go around them and we lost it for a bit but luckily the guides got us back on track.”

Despite the slight detour the group made it to the final peak, Mount Snowdon, in time to complete the challenge of scaling the Welsh peak, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike in 24 hours.

Twelve staff from the association’s head office in Chester and their area office in Helsby took part in the challenge which started on August 20.

Environment officer Rebecca Finbow was joined by her husband Tom, for the challenge which the couple did in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

“It was a very long 24 hours but it was really enjoyable,” said Rebecca.

“There were a few people hobbling and walking funnily around the office on Monday but everyone is talking about the next challenge and whether we should do it again next year.”

So far Tom and Rebecca have raised £470 towards their £600 target but they are still collecting sponsorship at www.justgiving.com/Rebecca-Finbow.
