Traffic chaos hit rush hour in Chester this evening (November 7) after a road was closed for almost two hours as police dealt with a woman who was threatening to jump off a bridge.

Emergency services were called to The Deva Link Road between Saughall Road and Blacon Avenue roundabout shortly before 4pm today (November 7) following concerns for a woman’s welfare.

Cheshire Police confirmed a woman was stood on the canal bridge over the Deva Link Road but was safely brought down about an hour and a half later.

The road re-opened in both directions at around 5.40pm and traffic has now returned to normal.

As rush hour took effect, the incident led to severe congestion either side of the Saughall Road lights and traffic was backing up through the Greyhound Retail Park and on to Sealand Road .

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 4pm today police were called to a bridge on the A5480 Deva Link Road following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

“Emergency services attended the scene and a road closure was temporarily put in place.

“At 5.30pm the woman came down off the bridge and she is currently being checked over.

“The road has now reopened in both directions and we would like to thank drivers for their patience.”
