POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after two Mid Cheshire motorcyclists died in road accidents.

A 38-year-old Winsford police officer died when his motor-bike crashed on the A556 Chester Road at Hartford at 6.50pm on Monday.

PC Tony Heaton, pictured, from St George's Road, Winsford, failed to negotiate a sweeping bend on his red Triumph motorcycle and left the road to the nearside.

The father-of-two was riding along the Chester-bound carriage way and police are appealing for witnesses. They also want to speak to the drivers of two vehicles seen at the time of the crash to contact them.

A dark-coloured Audi was seen travelling in the opposite direction, towards Northwich, while a smaller vehicle bearing L-plates was seen travelling toward Chester ahead of the bike at the time of the accident.

PC Heaton suffered cardiac arrest at the scene and paramedics were unable to save him. It is unclear how the accident happened, but police believe that no other vehicles were involved.

PC Heaton was a keen rugby player and Cheshire Constabulary's Chief superintendent Chris Richards said: 'Tony was a good man to have on your side and showed a great team ethic whether on the rugby field or representing the force and this was reflected in his commitment to his colleagues.'
