A police investigation is underway following an attempted robbery at a chip shop in Ellesmere Port.

At around 10.15pm on Saturday (June 14) a man ran into the shop on Church Street with what appeared to be a knife and threatened the shop owner. The offender then jumped up onto the counter and kicked the cash till to try to open it but when this proved unsuccessful, ran out of the shop heading in the direction of Westminster Road.

Detective Constable Tom Davies said: "Nobody was injured in this incident, but it could have been very nasty and could have left the chip shop owner with serious injuries.

"There were customers in the shop when this happened who may have witnessed what occurred. They are asked to contact Cheshire police in confidence as soon as possible so that the offender can be stopped from doing this again."

The man is described as white, with short hair and medium build wearing a blue t-shirt.
